Known for handcrafted signature ales and pub-inspired dishes, Jackie O’s is taking the meaning of locally produced goods a step further.
The brewery, which is located at 24 W. Union St., started a farm 14 months ago to further expand sustainability.
Quality and the use of locally produced food has been a commitment for Jackie O’s owner Art Oestrike, who said the farm was always something he eventually wanted to start in partnership with the business.

Shake the winter blues and celebrate the beginning of spring this Thursday at Jackie O’s with Southern charmers The Revivalists and funky-alt The Burning River Ramblers.

Comprised of half jazzy blues and half soulful Americana, New Orleans natives The Revivalists mark the perfect blend of all-American boys and southern gentlemen.

After making the life-changing decision to move from Ohio down South to pursue music four years ago, vocalist and guitarist David Shaw’s decision is definitely paying off. The Revivalists were named Best Emerging Artists in 2011 at Gambit Magazine’s Big Easy Awards.

Lower profits loom in face of Q2S transition

With Ohio University’s classes ending 36 days earlier on the semester system, this May will be the last chance for local businesses to soak up the benefits of the most profitable warm month in Athens.
Festivals and OU events fill every weekend in May, drawing people out to enjoy the warm weather and bringing in substantial revenue for Uptown bars and restaurants.
However, because students will head home for the summer earlier after the quarters-to-semesters switch, businesses will miss out on a time that is typically the year’s biggest moneymaker, said Paige Alost, executive director of the Athens County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Local gypsy-swing band takes on Jackie O’s stage

Jackie O’s Brewery is hosting Coolville Hotclub’s CD release party this Saturday from 8-11 p.m. Snacks will be provided by Restaurant Salaam.
The Coolville Hot Club, based in Athens, first got together to play music inspired by gypsy-jazz musicians, Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. According to a release, the band’s name comes from the original band formed in the 1930s by Reinhardt and Grappelli: The Quintet of the Hotclub of Paris.
“Many modern-day players of this kind of music have their own adaptation of that name. There’s the Hotclub of Detroit, the Hotclub of San Francisco,” said Mark Burhans, violinist for the band. “I thought the name ‘Hotclub Sandwich’ would be pretty cool, but it was already taken. ‘Coolville Hotclub’ identifies us regionally, besides being a cool name all by itself.”

Jackie O’s is going green this Thursday with the winter quarter release party of College Green Magazine. For those unfamiliar with the publication, “College Green is an independent publication that explores the environmental issues affecting Southeast Ohio,” according to their website, and attempt to bridge the gap between students and their environment. And if supporting a local organization isn’t incentive enough, come out and jam along with the musical stylings of The Bob Stewart Band who will be playing the event.

“I like to support the student organizations at this school and College Green is great. It’s a great thing. Also, we just haven’t gotten to play since Thanksgiving… so we need to play. And when we get a gig, it gives us a good excuse to practice and get together. Some people play golf; we play in a band,” said Bob Stewart, lead singer and guitarist of the group.

As director of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, Stewart finds it difficult to juggle his time between his professional life and life as a musician. His band usually plays a single gig per quarter with shows picking up around summertime when he and his bandmates have more free time.

neighborhoodr-athensohio:

Those looking to eat, drink and be merry the night before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season begins or those just searching for some New Orleans fun can celebrate Mardi Gras at Jackie O’s on Union Street on Tuesday.

Will Drury, who organizes Athens music festivals Boogie on the Bricks and Groove Street Festival, will be bringing some Creole flavor to the popular pub in celebration of Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday. Drury, who owned a bar and restaurant in New Orleans for six years prior to moving to Athens in 2010, said Jackie O’s will get a taste of Louisiana beginning at 8 p.m. on Tuesday with plenty of New Orleans music, drinks and of course, beads.

Drury said he could be found among the New Orleans Mardi Gras celebrations, including riding in several parades, from 1991 until he moved to Athens.

Andy Shaw Band to bring family dynamic to Athens performance

A 65-year-old retired schoolteacher seems like unlikely company among the young band members who make up the Andy Shaw Band, but Jim Shaw fits right into this family band.
“(Playing with my family) has been, overall, a positive experience,” said Chris Shaw, the band’s drummer and backup vocalist and Andy Shaw’s brother. “We are able to communicate very well and work out any musical problems.”
The Andy Shaw Band is made up of Andy, who sings lead and plays guitar, Chris and their father Jim, who plays keyboard. The other band members are lead guitarist Theo Perry and bass player Matt Paetsch. The band will play at at 10 p.m. Thursday at Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery, 24 W. Union St.

This Thursday night, Jackie O’s welcomes alt-folk/country group Clear Blue Sunday for their first night performing in Athens under the name.

The band began in 2011 as Grafton Street Three, a three-man folk group consisting of David Rice, Patrick Rice and Pat Buzzard. By the end of the year, violinist Stephanie Doyle and percussionist Kyle Davis joined the group, and the band became Clear Blue Sunday. The growing lineup has helped the band’s sound develop more, according to guitarist David Rice.

“Stephanie is really good at arranging harmonies. She really took us over the top with our vocal arrangements and harmonies,” Rice said. “Adding percussion gave us an opportunity for more upbeat stuff. It really helped develop our sound.”
