Ohio University’s College of Fine Arts is celebrating its 75th Anniversary. This year’s celebration’s theme, “Inspiring Lives,” has been planned with alumni and friends in mind. The 75th Celebration Weekend takes place this Friday through Sunday, April 13-15, with open houses, receptions, performances and concerts.

According to a news release, the weekend events will culminate Saturday night beginning with the Celebration Procession at 7:30 p.m. where the College Green will play host to open-air performances of dance, music, visual art and “theatrical happenings.”

Following the Procession is the Celebration Performance in Memorial Auditorium at 8 p.m. The performance will honor the College of Fine Arts faculty “who have inspired the lives of their students and forever influenced the legacy of Ohio University,” the release said.

OU graduate works to restore homegrown W.Va. walleye

Someday, when West Virginians catch really big walleyes, they’ll have an Ohio University graduate to thank.
Her name is Katie Zipfel. Without her, fish hatchery workers wouldn’t be able to tell one walleye from another — and state fisheries officials wouldn’t be on track to restore several Mountain State trophy walleye fisheries to their past glory.
Zipfel, a Division of Natural Resources fisheries biologist, is the agency’s resident expert on walleye genetics. With some scientific sleight-of-hand and a dash of laboratory legerdemain, she can tell a Lake Erie fish from a native West Virginia fish.

OU alum provides art for mythical read

Alexandra Shostak is a 2011 Ohio University graduate with big dreams for her writing. However, her claim to fame as of now is the illustrative work she has done for a new young-adult science fiction book, “Tangled Tides,” written by Karen Amanda Hooper.
“Its a funny story, actually, how I ended up doing the artwork,” said Shostak, who grew up in Athens and still lives here. “Karen is a good friend of mine, and she wanted royalty-free images for her book by the next day — it was really last minute. So for eight hours I worked on them. I drew them out by hand first, then put them into Photoshop.”
Shostak is not responsible for the cover art of “Tangled Tides,” but illustrated three images that are shown at the beginnings of each chapter, and which indicate to the reader a shift in the narrator. The drawings serve as “animal representations of the characters” that the chapter will revolve around.
