NAthens, Ohio

While students are facing difficulties during the transition from quarters to semesters, professors are confronting problems of their own.

Under the quarter system, Ohio University’s spring break coincided with the break of Athens City Schools, which proved convenient for professors with children enrolled in the local public schools.

Although the university worked together with the school system to agree upon the same dates for spring break of 2013, Athens City Schools superintendent Carl Martin said the district was forced to change the dates.

Lower profits loom in face of Q2S transition

With Ohio University’s classes ending 36 days earlier on the semester system, this May will be the last chance for local businesses to soak up the benefits of the most profitable warm month in Athens.
Festivals and OU events fill every weekend in May, drawing people out to enjoy the warm weather and bringing in substantial revenue for Uptown bars and restaurants.
However, because students will head home for the summer earlier after the quarters-to-semesters switch, businesses will miss out on a time that is typically the year’s biggest moneymaker, said Paige Alost, executive director of the Athens County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

10Fest to test out new fall time slot as result of OU’s Q2S transition

As the quarters to semesters switch looms in the near future of Ohio University students, organizers of the number fests prepare for the change by moving 10Fest to the fall.
“It’s weird that they are changing the date, but it’s so exciting because I feel like everyone is craving for fest season by the time spring rolls around,” said Melissa Miller, a sophomore studying psychology and sociology.
Dominic Petrozzi, the festival’s founder and Ohio University alumnus, said the change was due to a number of factors.
